General information
Valabre is a public organisation aiming at providing training for fire fighters specialties (such as forest fire fighting, urban search and rescue, chemical accidents, etc), new technologies development and implementation for civil protection (notably related to GIS and mapping), and information on natural risks to the population. The team working on the CURSOR project belongs to CEREN, the Test and Research department of Valabre. It is in charge of carrying out tests in the area of Civil Protection aiming at implementing new systems and evaluating their efficiency. CEREN started to participate in many European Research and Development programs. Within such projects, CEREN main tasks are focused on the identification of needs and requirements, as well as the organisation of exercises to test the systems in operational conditions.
Role in the project
Within CURSOR, Valabre is involved in WP1, WP6 and WP7. Valabre is in charge of several activities such as the identification and analysis of gaps, challenges and missing capabilities with respect to current practices, using different types of research methods: desktop and literature search, focus groups, interviews, questionnaires etc; the identification and mapping of user requirements. Furthermore, Valabre take part in the preparation of use cases and scenarios and participate in the tests for the assessment of the CURSOR SaR kit prototypes at different stages. Finally Valabre contributes to dissemination activities carried out by the project.
Participating members in the project
Frédérique Giroud
Frédérique Giroud is the Director of CEREN. She holds a PhD in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer at Polytech Marseille in 1997 and she also covers the role of Scientific Director of the centre. She collaborates with scientists, fire fighters and crisis managers to conduct many of the projects in which CEREN is involved. Her main areas of research related to forest fires are fluid mechanic, fire spread modelling, chemical additives, wildland urban interface management and fire instrumentation. She has participated in 25 European projects and organised the International Forest Fire conference in France in October 2002. Furthermore, she is in charge of establishing contacts between French scientists and European operations. In the frame of the Security call launched within the Seventh Framework Programme, she organised several field tests (within the projects ESS, E-SPONDER, INDIGO, SGL, DARIUS) in the context of crisis management with the participation of international observers. She is the contact point between the French Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Interior, and the General Directorate of civil aviation, to acquire all the required permissions for testing specific systems on the French territory.
Nathalie Flory-Bozabalian
Nathalie Flory-Bozabalian is a Study Engineer in the CEREN (Research and Study Centre of the Entente) for the Forest, since 2011. She holds an Engineer degree in Industrial Microbiology from the University of Marseille (France) and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from IOWA State University, USA. She worked successively on diverse projects about civil protection such as forest fire smoke composition, individual protective equipment for firefighters and testing of firefighting equipment. Since 2015, she works mainly on European Research Projects including INACHUS (USaR project), GEOSAFE (Forest fire research), and POCRISC (Earthquakes)
