General information

SINTEF is Scandinavia’s largest independent research organisation and is a non-profit research institute wholly owned by the SINTEF Foundation. SINTEF employs more than 2000 people most of whom are based in Trondheim and Oslo (Norway). More than 90% of SINTEF’s annual turnover derives from contract research for industry and the public sector in Norway and internationally, and SINTEF receives minimal state funding (around 8%). SINTEF is multidisciplinary, with international top-level expertise in a wide range of technological and scientific disciplines, medicine and the social sciences. SINTEF’s company vision is “technology for a better society”, and it is an important aspect of SINTEF’s societal role to contribute to the creation of more jobs. SINTEF acts as an incubator, commercialising technologies through the establishment of new companies. SINTEF is represented in this consortium by SINTEF Digital, Department of Mathematics and Cybernetics. RTD within autonomous robotics, including AUVs, UAVs and AGVs, has been a strategic area for several years.

Role in the project

In CURSOR, SINTEF will contribute to the development and integration of the Soft Miniaturised Underground Robotic Finder (SMURF), specifically by using its expertise on hardware prototyping, interface definition, control software and simulator development. SINTEF will build two prototypes based on Tohoku’s design and will lead the purchasing process of the SMURFs for the field trial. SINTEF is leading WP3: CURSOR Miniaturised platform for USaR – Soft miniaturised robots. Additionally, SINTEF will contribute to all dissemination activities (WP7).

Participating members in the project

Dr. Giancarlo Marafioti

Dr. Giancarlo Marafioti is a Senior Research Scientist and holds a PhD in Engineering Cybernetics on the topic of Model Predictive Control from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway. He has been a visiting researcher at the University Paris Sud – Supèlec, France and the University of California San Diego (UCSD), in USA. His research interests and areas of expertise include robotics for search and rescue, system integration, mathematical modelling, model predictive control, state and parameter estimation. He has several years of experience working on European Projects. He is the CURSOR project main contact at SINTEF and WP3 leader

Terje Mugaas

Terje Mugaas is a senior adviser at the department Mathematics and Cybernetics in SINTEF Digital. He has a bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics from UIA and a master’s degree in Engineering Cybernetics from NTNU. He has 15 years of experience within the area of industrial automation and embedded system design. His area of expertise includes design of mechanical and electrical systems, software engineering and control of robotic systems.
